How investment returns are calculated
Investment return measures how the value of an investment changes relative to the money put into it. Returns can be positive or negative. With regular contributions, your ending balance depends on both the investment's growth and when each contribution is added.
Formula used
For an initial investment with no recurring contributions, the standard compound-growth formula is:
Future value = Initial investment × (1 + r / n) ^ (n × t)Where:
- r = expected annual nominal return after the simplified annual fee deduction, expressed as a decimal.
- n = compounding periods per year.
- t = investment duration in years.
When monthly contributions are entered, the calculator grows the initial investment at the selected compounding frequency and adds each end-of-month contribution using the equivalent monthly growth rate. The annualized return is estimated from the full series of contributions and the projected ending value, rather than treating all contributions as if they were invested on day one.
Example calculation
Suppose you invest $10,000 initially and add $200 at the end of every month for 10 years. Assume a 7% annual return, a 0.5% annual fee and monthly compounding. The calculator estimates a future balance using these inputs. The result is a projection, not a forecast of actual market performance.
Your total contributions would be $34,000: the initial $10,000 plus $24,000 in monthly contributions. Any amount above or below that total represents estimated investment gain or loss before taxes.

Frequently asked questions
What is investment return?
Investment return is the gain or loss relative to the money invested. It may come from price changes, interest, dividends or other distributions. This calculator estimates growth from an assumed return rate; it does not separately model dividends or taxes.
What is the difference between total return and annualized return?
Total return on contributions compares the projected gain with all contributions made. Annualized return estimates the yearly rate implied by the timing of contributions and the final value. When there are recurring contributions, these measures are not interchangeable.
Does this calculator guarantee my investment will grow?
No. Actual returns may fluctuate, and you may lose some or all of your invested money. Use multiple return assumptions to understand how sensitive your plan is to market performance.
Does changing the currency convert my investment?
No. The currency selector only changes how amounts are displayed. It does not convert amounts using exchange rates. Enter all amounts in the currency you select.
Are taxes included in the result?
No. Taxes, transaction charges, and tax treatment of dividends or capital gains are not included. Your actual after-tax result depends on your location, investment type and personal circumstances.
How does inflation affect my investment?
Inflation reduces purchasing power over time. The inflation-adjusted value divides the projected future balance by the assumed cumulative inflation factor to estimate what that balance might be worth in today's money.
