What Is a Percentage?

A percentage expresses a proportion out of 100. The symbol % means “per hundred.” Percentages make it easier to compare portions, prices, changes and measurements, even when the original numbers are different.

For example, 25% means 25 out of every 100. It is equivalent to 0.25 as a decimal and one quarter as a fraction. Percentages are commonly used for shopping discounts, tax estimates, business growth, grades, budgets and financial comparisons.

Percentage Formulas

1. Find a percentage of a number

Result = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Number

Example: 15% of 200 = (15 ÷ 100) × 200 = 30.

2. Find what percentage one number is of another

Percentage = (Part ÷ Whole) × 100

Example: 30 is what percentage of 150? (30 ÷ 150) × 100 = 20%.

3. Calculate percentage change

Percentage change = ((New − Original) ÷ |Original|) × 100

Example: a value increases from 80 to 100. The change is 20, equivalent to a 25% increase.

The absolute value in the denominator allows comparisons when the original value is negative. If the original value is zero, the percentage change is undefined.

4. Add or subtract a percentage

Increase = Original × (1 + Percentage ÷ 100)

Decrease = Original × (1 − Percentage ÷ 100)

Example: subtracting a 20% discount from 100 gives 80 before any additional taxes or charges.

Everyday Examples of Percentages

Shopping discounts

If an item costs 80 and has a 25% discount, the discount is 20 and the reduced price is 60. The final amount charged may differ if taxes, delivery fees or other charges apply.

Business growth

If monthly sales rise from 4,000 to 5,000, the increase is 1,000. Dividing 1,000 by the original 4,000 gives a 25% increase.

Budgeting

If you spend 300 from a budget of 1,200, your spending represents 25% of that budget. This can help you compare expenses and monitor spending over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate 10% of any number?

Divide the number by 10. For example, 10% of 250 is 25. This works because 10% is one tenth of a number.

How do I calculate a percentage without a calculator?

Convert the percentage into a decimal by dividing it by 100, then multiply by the number. For example, 15% becomes 0.15, and 0.15 × 200 = 30.

What is the difference between percentage points and percent change?

Percentage points describe the direct difference between two percentages. A change from 10% to 15% is 5 percentage points, but it is a 50% relative increase compared with the original 10%.

Can a percentage be greater than 100%?

Yes. A value of 150% means one and a half times the reference amount. For example, 150% of 200 equals 300.

Can I calculate a percentage decrease?

Yes. Select “Percentage increase or decrease,” enter the original value and new value, and the calculator will show the percentage change. A smaller new value produces a decrease.

Does selecting a currency convert exchange rates?

No. Currency selection changes how a monetary result is displayed. It does not convert the input or result into another currency. Enter all monetary values in the same currency.

Why can't percentage change be calculated from zero?

The percentage-change formula divides the difference by the original value. Division by zero is undefined, so a percentage change from an original value of zero cannot be expressed by this formula.
